Like most breeders, we send some mares away for breeding and know the concerns of boarding at farms other than our own. This keeps us well attuned to the importance of communication and attention to detail regarding horses boarded at HMF.

For pregnant mares coming in, we request that you have her here at least two weeks before her foaling date. We offer 24 hour monitoring by personnel using video/audio cameras. The foaling fee of $475.00 includes mare watch and prepartum preparation, nightly tail wrapping and cleaning, initial postpartum exam of mare and foal and routine, uncomplicated delivery. We make sure the foal is up and nursing and the afterbirth is passed within 3 hours of delivery. We also treat the foals navel cord and feet for at least the first four days and monitor the mare for postpartum complications. Foals are imprinted at birth and taught to lead while here.
We perform a passive transfer blood test to assure proper immunoglobin transfer to the foal. If inadequate immunity is found we have the necessary frozen colostrum and intravenous products on hand to treat that condition.
Maiden and barren mares are managed differently when preparing them for the breeding shed and we have protocols that address each situation to maximize pregnancy rates.
HMF can directly haul mares or coordinate commercial transportation to any area such as eastern Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, Maryland and Kentucky.
An onsite breeding lab with an ultrasound and endoscope allows preparation and treatment of mares having infections or histories of conception problems. Multiple lab procedures can be done if neccessary such as uterine cultures, uterine biopsies or progesterone assays.
If you are shipping a mare with a foal by her side to HMF, have the immune status of the foal verified as soon after 12 hours of age as possible. If there was inadequate immunoglobins passed to foal, treat the condition and verify adequate protection before shipping. If the foal is over 16 weeks of age, we recommend that it receive the first set of vaccinations before being shipped.
We also board weanling, yearlings and horses of racing age and can offer most lay-up care. All of our yearlings and some of our weanlings go through our Sales Preparation Program which we offer to a limited amount of outside horses as well.
